What Hotels Have That You Forgot

Did you ever check into a hotel and remember that you forgot to pack the very necessities of life? Familykenkel knows that many hotels have what you left at home right at the front desk.

So you flew all the way across the country for business or pleasure and when you got settled in the hotel room to unpack, you realized that your toiletries kit or some other badly needed items are still at home? No toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, shampoo, or lotion in sight. Your smart phone is five minutes from shutting down and there is no charger in sight. Rather than rush out and try to find a drug store to purchase the forgotten items, why not visit the front desk and ask them if they have what you need. Familykenkel has found the following items are available at most hotel front desks:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste and mouthwash
  • Razors
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Body lotion
  • Soap for the body and face
  • Mini blow dryers
  • Straightening irons and curling irons
  • Nail files
  • Cell phone chargers of all kinds
  • Converters
  • Picnic paper plates and bowls
  • Plastic eating utensils
  • Socks
  • Sewing kits
  • Pain reliever, stomach ache remedies
  • Kids’ entertainment items
All you have to do is ask the clerk what they have. If not, there is usually a store nearby where the items can be bought.

How to Keep Kids Free from Colds

Kids will inevitably bring home a head cold from school and pass it around to everyone without meaning to. Familykenkel coughs up some suggestions for keeping kids cold free at school and at home.
  • Remind kids to wash their hands after using the bathroom at home and school.
  • Give them some hand sanitizer in a scent they like and pack one in their backpack.
  • Stick a few purse size packs of tissues in their bags and remind them to use it when coughing or sneezing.
  • Remind them to use the hand sanitizer after touching handrails, doorknobs and bathroom fixtures.
  • Give them a glass of OJ in the morning along with a multi vitamin with zinc, as it has been proven to ward off colds in children.
  • Feed them healthy foods that are filling and provide a lunch they will like with snacks to keep them full.
  • Be sure they are dressed appropriately for school with different layers of warmth to shed as the day goes on. Don’t forget gloves, mittens and hats.
  • Enforce a regular bedtime every night. Check on kids after 15 minutes to be sure the light is out and no digital devices are being used.
Familykenkel  notes that when a child develops a fever with a head cold, administer a children’s ibuprofen to reduce it. Most colds are viral in nature and not bacterial. Oddly, more antibiotics are prescribed to help kids get over colds. Of course, never make a kid go to school if they say they don’t feel well and have a low-grade fever. By the time they come home, the cold could have turned in to something worse like the flu or strep throat.

The Fraud Alert

Credit card fraud is nothing new, but the amount of fraudulent claims is. More major retailers are reporting security break-ins. There is another new claim to be aware of and it entails a small charge to your credit or debit card of $9.84.

Familykenkel learns that the Better Business Bureau issued a fraud alert for consumers who see the above small charge show up on credit and debit account statements. It will often appear with the wording “customer support” or identify itself as any number of different websites. If you see the charge on your account, call the card issuer and report the charge as fraud.

The investigative blog KrebsOnSecurity, the first one to notice this type of fraud, dug into the $9.84 charge and found that it led them through a maze of more than 230 websites stemming from London, India and Cyprus.

As we have mentioned before, monitor all credit and debit account statements regularly for charges – no matter the dollar amount. As was the case this time, the small charge is the first sign of credit/debit card fraud. Thieves will often charge small amounts to test the card first, before trying to charge something major to it. Familykenkel encourages readers to be vigilant about their financial accounts. Be proactive when using cards in stores. Switch buying purchases from a PIN request to a signature request. This is more secure than quickly keying in a four digit PIN. Be aware. Be alert. And report anything suspicious.

Exercise Immediately Affects You

Most people do not think of the immediate affects of exercise, but rather than short or long-term effects. We wanted to share what we learned about how our bodies and minds feel after one 30 minute brisk walk.

Here are some of the benefits we get:
Our mood improves. The release of endorphins is one of the noticeable changes we found from a quick walk. This “feel good” neurotransmitter is one of the main reasons why people exercise.

Familykenkel notes that our DNA changes. Sure, we inherit some genes from our parents. But after one workout certain genes “turn on” and that affects metabolism and strength.

University of Michigan researchers found in 2007 that a single cardio workout increased storage of fat in muscle, which actually improved insulin sensitivity. Low insulin sensitivity, often called insulin resistance, can lead to diabetes. So it seems that one workout works at preventing diabetes.

The blood flow to the brain which comes from the heavy breathing exercise brings helps us get and stay focused both before and after sweat session.

It makes us feel good to know that one brisk walk eases stress with all of the above factors factoring in.Familykenkel encourages readers to go outside at work and take a 30 minute brisk walk on lunch break. It will ease stiffness in the joints, legs and back, gets blood flowing and helps ease the stress of daily job tasks. The immediate affects of exercise make us feel better and help us stay focused all day and in to the evening.

Forbes Living TV Asks Do Health Apps Really Help?

Need a Doc? There's an app for that.

There is an abundance of health apps available for anyone who wants them. Now there are new apps if you want to talk to a doctor and do so anonymously. We decided to check a few of them out and let readers know a little more about them.

HealthTap is a free app that allows users to send a question to the app and a doctor will answer it in about 24 hours. It is not 100% anonymous as it does ask for some personal information. And to be honest, sometimes we have an embarrassing health question we want an answer for and do not want to reveal ourselves.

Talk to Docs costs 99 cents and is anonymous. Tap the app to ask a question (voice or text) and then tap search to find the answer. The app picks out the keywords and runs a search on the HealthTaps answer database. The most relevant answers are sent back in a list.

Forbes Living TV notes that both of the above apps are available for iOS, Android and on the healthtaps.com website.

Doctor on Demand is a newer app we’ve been hearing a lot about lately. Since it is new, it is only available in 15 states (including New York, California, and Ohio), and only between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. It will expand to 40 states be available longer later in 2014. It is HIPPA compliant meaning privacy is paramount.

It is not free. Each 15 minutes costs $40 and it works well with those lucky to have Flexible Spending Accounts.

The user types in a few symptoms and can send images of symptoms, and be connected to a real doctor via video conferencing.

Health apps that track things like blood pressure, heart rate and general fitness tracking are useful and helpful to both the user and the healthcare provider.  There are many of them, and Forbes Living TV wants to know which ones work the best. Let us know.

Forbes Living TV on the Myth of Microwaving Veggies

There are some days when the thought of spending one minute in the kitchen could make us run out the door to the nearest fast-food place. These are the days when we are whipped from work and plan to microwave everything for dinner – even veggies – just to get it on the table fast. Does the thought of nuking all the goodness out of them freak you out a little? Don’t worry about it. Forbes Living TV has some good news.

You know that steaming vegetables is the best way to cook them without the possibility of losing nutrients and vitamins. Well steaming in the microwave works too and nothing gets lost under the plastic wrap. And it’s considered one of the best ways to good vegetables so they don’t lose their nutritional value.

Use a plastic wrap that says “microwave safe” on it or risk having food taste funny.
Use a little bit of water in the container with the veggies and in seconds you will have perfectly fine broccoli, beans, carrots or whatever you like.

Forbes Living TVnotes that microwaving tomatoes and carrots makes their carotenoids more available to our bodies. It makes the biotin in eggs digestible. And heat kills bacteria in food that can make us sick. Just remember that a little bit of water and a tight plastic wrap lid on the container will yield nicely steamed  veggies which are still chock full of the good stuff. Bon appetite.

Forbes Living TV and Why Happy Seniors Live Longer

Happy, healthy seniors

A recent study conducted by the Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care at University College London found that happy seniors live longer than unhappy seniors. Forbes Living TV shares what it learned about this joyful news.

Surely, happy people are bound to live longer lives than those who are not happy. In this latest study, generally happy elderly people reported improved mobility and lived longer than their unhappy peers. People who are happier in general tend to be more active, eat better and therefore are able to move better and live longer. However, it was not shown in the study results if those who were happy were healthy to begin with, more affluent than their sad peers or had any other qualifying factor.

Generally speaking, seniors who are able to move well, have good balance, and are in generally good health will continue in those ways for the rest of their lives. Forbes Living TV encourages older people to join a senior fitness class as they not only improve overall health and movement, but also improve social relationships, which in turn makes a lonely person happier. Health and happiness work hand in hand. Ask your doctor if there is a senior fitness class in the area to join. Most are offered for a very low cost or no cost at all.

How to Get the Best Free Work Out from Forbes Living TV

There are quite a few ways to get a work out without paying a cent, or paying very little. It takes creativity and some space, but making your own workout studio at home, with equipment you might need is east.

If you live in an apartment, and perhaps even a small one, it is still fairly easy to workout at home. Find a space where furniture is light and can be moved easily and make it your workout space.

Hand weights are inexpensive at discount stores. Buy a pair and spend as little as $10.00. If that is not in the budget, try using canned goods, laundry detergent bottles or two other equally weighty items. ForbesLiving TV staffers have used dining room table chairs for dips and canned goods as weights during challenging economic times.

Spend a little time with your TV and search the channel guide for exercise shows. DVR the ones you like and turn it on when you get home from work, or try it before work.

Dig around on YouTube and find exercise or yoga videos you think would be fun. Bookmark the pages and use those also in your workout routine.

Walk. Walk around the mall, walk around a man-made lake, walk around the neighborhood – just walk.

Want to workout like a celebrity without paying the hefty price tag? Online personal trainers can be found on FitOrbit for just $50.00.  Forbes Living TV also suggests working out with a friend and being each other’s personal trainers.  Have fun.

Forbes Living TV -- Love My Pet Health News

There are 70 million dogs and 74 million cats in American homes being loved, spoiled and neglected in health care. Forbes Living TV offers some preventative health care suggestions for pet owners in Love My Pet news.

You’ve heard that the American population is fighting obesity. So is its pet population.  The percentage of pets who are overweight or are obese are downright shocking:
Dogs – 37%
Cats – 90%
Pets become obese from being fed too much and not getting enough exercise. Their weight problem can result in medial problems, just like their human owners: diabetes, arthritis, kidney and thyroid problems. Some pet owners have no idea their animals are not well because they are not getting annual check-ups from the vet. Visits to the family veterinarian are down 21% for dogs and 30% for cats since 2001. However, emergency visits are up.

Forbes Living TV notes that as an animal gets older, it needs at least an annual check-up from the vet. While the price of an office visit and any blood work which needs done can be a bit expensive, it is well worth the cost to keep the family fur-kid healthy. Dogs, and especially cats are pretty good at not showing they don’t feel well.

Forbes Living TV knows this is the primary reason to take family pets in for regular check-ups. If cost is a factor and you have been going to that vet for a while, ask if the visit and any tests can be billed. The important thing is to be sure the treasured and loved family pet or pets are healthy and stay healthy. Prevention is key and preventative exams can be lifesavers.

Tips on Advertising an Estate Sale

Whether you’re having an estate sale or a yard sale it’s important that you let people know when and where your sale will take place. Some people have a yard sale a few times a year so that they can get rid of things they don’t need and make a little extra money. Many people have estate sales when someone passes away or if they want to start fresh.

It’s a good idea to clean out closets once in a while and get rid of the things you aren’t using before they become clutter. Familykenkel came up with a few tips on advertising an estate sale.

4 Tips on Promoting an Estate Sale

1. Newspaper Ad-after you have decided on a date and time you should put an ad in the newspaper and online. Most newspapers and community papers have online publications with classified sections. Placing an ad isn’t expensive and it will let people know you have a sale taking place.

2. Community Boards-you want as many people in your community to know you’re having a sale as possible. Community Bulletin boards are a great way to get the work out. Look around your area to see where people put notices and add one of your own.

3. Community Website-many communities also have a community website available for advertisements. Go on the Internet and take a look at what’s available in your area. This is a great way to let people know you are selling furniture.

4. Post It-this will depend on where you live and what the regulations are for that area. Some areas will allow you to post signs letting people know where and what time the estate sale or yard sale is. This will let people in your area know about the sale and find your home. You should use a neon color and a black marker.Make sure you add your address and mention what type of sale it is.

Estate sales are a great way to sell furniture and other household items. Whatever items are left over you can put on consignment and donate. The producers of Familykenkel suggest these tips for a successful estate sale.

How to Lose Weight Quicker

There are some very easy things to do to lose weight quicker and Familykenkel shares them with readers.

Ditch the “going all the way” mindset for one that is easier to follow. Replace it with one two healthy swaps and losing weight might be easier.

Vow to dine out once a week or even once a month. By skipping daily or even three times a week meals dining out, save calories and money.

When grocery shopping, buy healthy snacks instead of salty or sugary ones.

Eat a decent breakfast. More diet successes are made when the dieter eats a healthy breakfast. It takes very little time and its curbs hunger for hours.

Find a way to squeeze exercise into your day. Run in place during TV commercials. Do a few sit up. Walk around outside on your lunch hour. It all adds up when coupled with healthy eating to boost weight loss.

Familykenkel suggests ridding the pantry and fridge of the snacks that make us fat. Replace them with dried nuts and fruits, juice drinks, vegetables and other healthy fare.

Work out like a rock star. Load up your favorite listening device and work out longer listening to favorite songs.

Plan dessert. If it is a piece of chocolate for dessert or a glass of wine with dinner, cut back on other high calorie, high fat foods and use the calories saved for this. Reward yourself.

There are other tips and tricks to losing weight. Familykenkel wants to know what you do to drop pounds.

Tips on When to Use Your Intuition

Many of us feel we have intuition about things. We are able to read people fairly well and make split second decisions when we need to. In some cases this gut feeling we get seems to get better as we age. There is a reason for that. Familykenkel did a bit of research about intuition and found out some interesting things.

Research has found that intuition in many cases comes from an unconscious form of reasoning. It comes from the way we collect knowledge over time. As we collect knowledge about life we begin to recognize patterns. Your brain organizes patterns into blocks of information. Then when you come across a certain type of situation of familiar design your brain recognizes the larger picture. This is what many people refer to as intuition. Familykenkel came up with a few ways people use their intuition.

4 Ways People Use Intuition

Experience-when you do something you have a lot of experience in you can probably trust your instincts. If you have been playing golf for many years you can use your gut rather than analyze every swing. At this point you should know what works.

Getting a Second Opinion-no one knows your body as well as you do, and if you think something is wrong but your doctor doesn’t agree maybe you should get a second opinion. In this case it’s important to trust your intuition. It could save your life.

Purchasing a Home-when you buy a house it becomes your home unless you’re buying it as an investment. If you’re purchasing a house to live in you should feel right about it. Studies have found that people who bought a house and went with their intuition concerning the purchase were more satisfied. Of course the home should fit into your budget and you should look at the school district if you have children, but you should also consider the way it feels. Does it feel like a home to you?

Lying-sometimes you get a feeling that someone is lying to you. If you have a strong intuition about this maybe you should look into the situation a bit more. Sometimes you can tell someone is lying if they are acting differently. A few signs that someone is lying are when they stare a bit too long, move around a lot, or cover their mouth with their hand.

Value of Movie Trailers

The value of movie trailers is felt for film makers, producing studios and movie viewers. Everybody wants to know a little something about the film before it is released on a wide scale basis. Familykenkel takes a look at the value of the movie trailer.

One hundred and fifty seconds is all it takes to entice the ticket-paying public to go and see the film. Most movie trailers are that long and their intent is to tickle the public’s interest in the film. The best and most successful trailers are released months before the film is out.

Movie trailers are also big business in the entertainment industry where the producing studio can spend as much as $1 million per 2 1/2-minutes on one. Take into consideration that YouTube viewers watched 1 billion movie trailers through the first three quarters of last year, according toTrailerpop, a company which tracks them. The ads for the trailers even generated their own award show – the Golden Trailer Awards. All of these factors will determine how good the movie trailer is and is how financially successful the movie itself will be. So how are they made? Familykenkel peeks behind the highly secured doors of their production to explain.

Film editing companies and their editors receive raw footage of the movie on a flash drive. From there, they condense the movie into a short 150 seconds of exciting, enticing action without giving away too much of the plot or blowing the ending. Today’s movie goer wants know more about the plot before they plunk down the $15 to $20 for one ticket. So film editors crank out the trailer and the studios market test it to see if it reveals too little or two much. In very rare cases, the movie trailer is rated as better than the film itself.

Familykenkel learns that many film editors think of the trailers as little movies themselves. There are apps for them which the public can download to watch the best ones available, play games to win movie-related prizes and engage in energetic discussion about the upcoming film. All this generates good publicity buzz about the film which hopefully translates to big bucks.

Tips on How to Find a Career You Love

Whether you just graduated from college or you’re a seasoned professional in need of a new direction, looking for a new career path can be daunting. You need to do your research and take a few things into consideration. The producers of Familykenkel did a bit of research on this topic and found a few interesting facts.

Think about your strengths and the skills you already have. If you’re changing your career the skills you gained from working can help you in your new career choice. You may be able to find something that is connected to what you did previously. Familykenkel came up with a few ideas for making a career change.

4 Tips for Finding a Career that Inspires You

1. Do What You Love-when you’re considering a new career think about the things you really enjoy doing. In some cases it’s possible to turn a passion into a career. Think about what you would be willing to do for free if you had that luxury. That may be a good direction to start.

2. Do Your Research-check out a few online discussion boards in an area you are interested in. LinkedIn has quite a few groups for various careers. Take a look at organizations connected to your interests and speak with people in that field.

3. Become an Intern-one way to see if you really are interested in a certain field is by becoming an intern. You will get an inside view of what that career entails. This way you can see if it’s for you. This will also give you an opportunity to meet people in that field, get advice and possibly a job opportunity.

4. Find a Mentor-finding the right mentor can make a huge difference. Research shows that having a mentor is important when it comes to career success. When you start a new career it’s important to have someone to guide you. You can find a mentor by attending networking events and speaking with colleagues. When you come across someone you think would be a good mentor ask that person if they would like to get a cup of coffee. Let this person know you respect her and her work and that you would like the opportunity to run ideas by her from time to time. The relationship will evolve from there.
